あきやすみ

あきやすみわたしはジャネットさんとNew YorkのIthacaにいきました。ジャネットさんは Cornell だいがくにいきました。わたしはIthacaだいがくにいきました。金曜日と 土曜日にわたしはJesseさんと ベースボルをみました。日曜日にわたしはKellyさんとStarbucksでコーヒーをのみました。まいばんともだしはべんきょうしました。でも、まいばんわたしはねました。火曜日にわたしはジャネットさんとスミスだいがくにかえりました。

Why I am taking Japanese.

When I was 9 years old my older sister introduced me to the anime Sailor Moon. Soon after there was a pokemon craze among elementary/middle school children. I partook in this craze, but after the craze was over I was still watching Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon introduced me to other anime like Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo. Both of these shows moved to a late night tv show block on Cartoon Network called Adult Swim. Here, I was introduced to more anime such as Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha. By this time I was in 7th grade.
Ever since then I've loved anime and manga. This has made me very interested in the Japanese culture Horrible dubbing led me to watch anime in Japanese with subtitles, and i found a deep appreciation for the language. I love how you can tell how someone feels just by their tone, yes that's also possible in English, but the voice actors and actresses are so much better in Japan!
I took French for three years and Spanish for two, but I was never really interested in either. Now that I'm in Japanese I find that I'm excited and happy to do the homework. I also get a thrill from watching anime that I've seen for years and actually recognizing what is being said (sometimes)! In manga I can read some of the untranslated sound effects and that is also very exciting.
I have no real reason for taking Japanese except for my own pleasure. I know that it is good for me to learn a language other than my own, cognitively speaking, and I am ecstatic that I've found a language that I'm so unyieldingly interested in taking. I barely view it as a class here at Smith, but rather an opportunity. I don't even mind if I don't do stellar in the class, as long as I learn Japanese I will be happy. (of course if I'm learning then I'll probably do well...)
As of right now, I'm very excited to learn Kanji and adjectives!
